CLIR Data Services Postdoctoral Fellowship 


The Claremont Colleges Library (CCL) is offering a two-year Data Services Postdoctoral Fellowship. The Postdoctoral fellow will work collaboratively with librarians to develop a robust suite of data services to support student and faculty research across the seven Claremont Colleges. The CCL has an award-winning information literacy program and seeks to expand our offerings to include data literacy instruction and data management education and support.

The fellow will partner with librarians, faculty, and staff to develop a scalable and sustainable set of data services and programs. A data services needs assessment for the Claremont Colleges with recommendations will be an important part of the first year’s work. The successful applicant will be instrumental in implementing accepted recommendations. The fellow will help build capacity for data management in the CCL by developing and conducting a scaffolded training program for librarians and researchers across all disciplines. Augmenting the CCL’s instruction program, the fellow will work with faculty on integrating data literacy into their courses and to provide data management planning and guidance. Working closely with managers of the CCL’s digital platforms, the fellow will make recommendations for a robust data curation and digital preservation program and assist the implementation of those recommendations.


    • Conduct a data management needs assessment of the Claremont Colleges; devise a set of recommendations for the role that the CCL can play in data services.
    • In collaboration with librarians across the CCL, design and conduct a training program for data literacy, discovery, use, and management. Deliver this training to CCL librarians and Claremont Colleges researchers. Topics include:
      • Introduction to core data, statistical, and quantitative literacy principles.
      • Data management planning, including compliance with the standards of major grant-funding institutions.
      • Best practices in data visualization and communication.
      • Other issues arising from the needs assessment.
    • Contribute to the implementation and development of data services at the CCL; develop outreach practices for the services.
    • Participate in the work of the Research, Teaching, and Learning Division, including, but not limited to, research consultations and course related instruction.
    • Identify and recommend data and digital preservation practices and facilitate implementation.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • PhD in a relevant discipline acquired within the five years preceding the fellowship appointment.
  • Practical understanding and experience with the research data lifecycle.
  • Skills in project management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in teams.
  • Experience and interest in teaching.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Desired Knowledge and Skills

  • Advanced degree in any discipline that has a strong foundation in quantitative or qualitative research.
  • Understanding of core issues in the management and curation of data throughout the research process.
  • Familiarity with intellectual property issues.
  • Familiarity with the standards and practice in digital and data curation.
  • Familiarity with digital repository platforms and data repositories (e.g. DSpace, Fedora, ICPSR).
  • Knowledge of public and proprietary resources for national and international data.
  • Familiarity with software for statistical, geospatial, and/or qualitative analysis.
  • Knowledge of data visualization best practices and tools.
  • Knowledge of free and licensed sources for datasets.
  • Familiarity with issues related to data collection and analysis.
  • Experience with data cleaning techniques and tools.

Based on the Oxford model, The Claremont Colleges consortium combines the specialization, flexibility and personal attention of a small college with the resources of a large university. The five undergraduate colleges consist of Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, Pomona, and Scripps. The two graduate institutions are the Claremont Graduate University and the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences. The consortium dates back to 1925 when Claremont Graduate University was founded in partnership with Pomona College, the oldest of the colleges (1887). All five of the undergraduate colleges are ranked in the top 40 of the 2015 US News & World Report rankings of liberal arts colleges.
